Mitosis Vs Meiosis (gcse And A Level)
Date : 23/10/2023
It is very important to understand the similarities and differences between mitosis and meiosis, as marks often come up for these in GCSE, and understanding of these is crucial for A Level. Here is a brief summary of these similarities and differences:
Mitosis produces identical daughter cells, while Meiosis produces genetically different cells.
Mitosis has 1 division, while Meiosis has 2 divisions.
Mitosis has the haploid number of chromosomes, Meiosis has the diploid number of chromosomes.
The above is GCSE only, the below point is important for A Level:
In meiosis, genetic diversity is introduced by independent segregation (as chromosomes can line up on either side of the cell equator), and crossing over.
