There are almost always marks available for knowing your gas and ion tests in GCSE chemistry.

These are all the ion and gas tests you will need to know for AQA GCSE chemistry taken directly from their specification, which can be found here: https://filestore.aqa.org.uk/resources/chemistry/specifications/AQA-8462-SP-2016.PDF

Gases:

Hydrogen: Place a burning splint at the open end of a tube of gas. If hydrogen is present, there will be a squeaky "pop" sound

Oxygen: Place a glowing splint at the open end of a tube of gas. If oxygen is present, the splint will reignite

Carbon Dioxide: Bubble the gas through limewater. If carbon dioxide is present, the limewater will go cloudy.

Chlorine: Put damp litmus paper into the gas. If chlorine is present, the chlorine will bleach the litmus paper and it will turn white.

IONS (split into several sections)

Metal ions: Flame test

Lithium: Crimson

Sodium: Yellow

Potassium: Lilac

Calcium: Orange - red

Copper: Green

Metal hydroixdes (the NaOH test)

Colour of precipitate with dilute NaOH Colour of precipitate with excess NaOH

Aluminium: White Dissolves

Calcium White White

Magnesium White White

Copper (II) Blue Blue

Iron (II) Green Green

Iron (III) Red/Brown Red/Brown

Carbonate ions:

Carbonate ions react with dilute acids to form carbon dioxide, which can be tested for and identified as earlier explained in the gas tests.

Halide ions (Silver nitrate test)

Colour of precipitate

Silver Chloride White

Silver Bromide Cream

Silver Iodide Yellow

Sulfate ions:

Sulfate ions produce a white precipitate when reacted with Barium Chloride in the presence of a dilute HCl catalyst

Those are all the gas and ion tests you need for GCSE AQA chemistry (and will be most of the tests for other boards if not all for other boards too!) It can seem daunting to learn all of these, but they come up almost if not EVERY YEAR, so it`s free marks!! Just study them for five minutes a day (that`s literally all you need) and you`ll know them within a few weeks!! If you have any questions (about this article or any other questions), please don`t hestitate to let me know!! Good luck with your studies!!
