What are historical interpretations? And why do they matter to history students?

Historical interpretations are an important concept that you will encounter in your GCSE and A-level history courses. They refer to the different ways in which people view and interpret historical events. These interpretations can differ based on the historian’s perspective, the time period in which they are writing, and the sources they use.

As a student, it is important to understand historical interpretations because they help you develop a critical understanding of history. By analysing different interpretations of historical events, you can gain a deeper understanding of the past and the ways in which it has been interpreted over time.

For example, let’s consider Hitler’s rise to power. Depending on the historian’s perspective, Hitler’s rise to power can be viewed as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, or the failure of the Weimar Republic. Each of these interpretations provides a different perspective on the same historical event, and each interpretation is based on different primary sources.

But why do interpretations of the past differ?

Historical interpretations differ because historians use different sources. Primary sources are the original documents or artefacts that provide evidence about the past. Historians use primary sources to construct their interpretations of historical events. However, different historians might use different primary sources, which can lead to different interpretations. For example, a historian who uses letters written by soldiers during World War I might have a different interpretation than a historian who uses government documents from the same time period because of the sources they have used.

As you study history, you will encounter different interpretations of historical events. It is important to evaluate these interpretations critically and to consider the historian’s perspective, the time period in which they are writing, and the sources they use. By doing so, you can develop a deeper understanding of the past and the ways in which it has been interpreted over time.
