What are the assessment objectives in GCSE History for Edexcel? And why do GCSE students need to know them?

GCSE History is a subject that requires students to develop a range of skills, including the ability to analyse and evaluate historical sources, construct well-reasoned arguments, and communicate their ideas effectively. To assess these skills, the exam boards have four assessment objectives (AOs) that are used to mark and grade GCSE History exams. These are:

1. AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the periods studied.

2. AO2: Explain and analyse historical events and periods studied using second-order historical concepts eg causation, change and continuity.

3. AO3: Analyse, evaluate and use sources (contemporary to the period) to make judgements, in the context of historical events studied.

4. AO4: Analyse, evaluate and make judgements about interpretations (including how and why interpretations may differ) in the context of historical events studied.

Each of these assessment objectives is designed to test a different aspect of a student’s knowledge and understanding of history. It is important to note that each assessment objective is weighted differently in the final GCSE History grade. AO1 and AO2 are each worth 20% of the final grade, while AO3 and AO4 are worth 30% each. Knowing this will mean that students who perform well on AO3 and AO4, using sources and interpretations, will have a significant advantage when it comes to achieving a high grade in GCSE History.

If you’re a GCSE History student looking to improve your grades, it is important to focus on developing your skills in each of these assessment objectives.
