In the exam hall there will be no teacher or tutor by your side to stop you making mistakes, to prompt you when you stall or let you have a little more time on a problem.

This means the focus will be entirely on the candidate as the extent to which you can work independently will determine exam success. Often tutoring can fall short of expectations because the tutor is too helpful and fails to support development of tutee independence.

It should be relatively easy for a well-qualified adult to use their knowledge to impress tutees and parents. However subject knowledge is one small part of the problem.

The key value add areas and skills are:

  • An organised approach to exam preparation planning support, setting objectives, and regular action setting/review.
  • Help students to be more effective and have greater enthusiasm for independent learning by coaching and developing skills to support independent problem resolution.
  • Develop time management techniques to help manage pressure in exams.
  • Develop positive habits ahead of exams so answers are presented in a way that maximises marks.
  • Improve familiarity with mark schemes and how examiners will determine marks.
  • Develop skills to react fast and work within tight time allocations.
  • How to think like a marker and make work easy to mark.
