Acton High School is a larger than average, co-educational, multi-faith comprehensive school based on Gunnersbury Lane in the London Borough of Ealing. The school is a short walk from Acton Town Tube Station on the Piccadilly line.

The school has a long history of supporting the educational needs of the local community, spanning over a hundred years. The school was founded in 1906, when it was known as Acton County Grammar School and only admitted boys at the inception. Thereafter in 1958, the school opened its doors to girls, after much pressure and campaigning from the local community. The school as it stands today is relatively new, with demolition of the old buildings beginning in 2005, and the new buildings being erected and opened over the course of the next year. In celebration of the opening of the new school buildings George Alagiah, a prominent figure in news media on television, was invited to officially declare the buildings open.

A few year later, in 2012, the school expanded and a new Sixth Form was also built and opened, which meant for the first time Acton High school offered its post GCSE students the opportunity to continue their educational path to AS Level and A2 level at the same site, before continuing onto higher education. The schoolÔÇÖs new Sixth Form was rated as ÔÇÿgoodÔÇÖ by Ofsted in their report dated June 2013.

The school has developed a culture of providing its students with a rounded and all-encompassing education, through equipping them with the life skills need to go on and be successful in higher education or in the work place, as well as ensuring it provides a good academic grounding though exam success. An example of this is the adoption of a Student Council programme which is at the heart of daily life at the school, enabling students to take responsibility for their own interests and matters of importance. This has been central to building a sense of participation amongst students from diverse backgrounds, as well as helping build confidence in key skill areas such as public speaking, negotiation and organisation.

Famous alumni of the school include Sir Austin Bide, who after leaving the school went on to become the President of what is now known as GlaxoSimthKline, a FSTE 100 multinational with international reach. Amongst its famous alumni, the school includes musicians and founding members of The Who Roger Daltrey CBE and John Entwistle.

Ofsted

About Ofsted

Ofsted have been inspecting schools on a regular basis since 2005. After a cursory warning period they undertake a thorough examination of the whole school. Inspectors will sit in on classes, assessing each teacher's teaching ability. They will also evaluate the way the current curriculum is implemented, and how the progress of each student is tracked throughout their tenure.

Each school is graded on a four point scale: 1 being outstanding, 2 being good, 3 means they require improvement, and 4 signifying inadequate. Those schools attaining an outstanding or good grade might not be re-inspected for as long as five years; while those receiving lower grades will be reassessed with greater frequency, with little or no notice prior to the inspectors arriving.
