ANECDOTES

I DO:

Øshort stories (1-2 lines to a mini paragraph) that help you explain your point/opinion.ØThe short stories are usually something you have experienced, or something you have read about.
ØState the point you are making.
ØGive the details – be brief.
ØState how this proves the point.

Example 1:

You have to fight for EQUALITY –

Girls at a local high school were sick of unfairness – boys always got to play football, basketball and cricket. The girls wanted to be able to play those sports too. They gathered as a group, organised a petition with more than 500 signatures and protested outside the school’s gym before school every day for a week.

The headteacher invited them to a meeting to talk about the issue.

An agreement was made – all sports would be open to all pupils on the school timetable. Therefore, because of the girls’ fight against injustice, they gained greater equality.

Example 2:

The need to gain experience –

Although I am privileged to be highly educated, I realised that learning theory and knowledge also needs to be coupled with practical experience. This was made obvious to me when I started working in a school for refugees and I realised that all the things I had learnt about teaching English to people who didn’t already know the language was made much more difficult when the learners had literally just left a war zone. I asked a colleague with years of experience, but no degree, for some help. Following her advice and using my knowledge meant that my lessons became what learners needed, not just what I wanted to teach.

YOU DO:

Write an anecdote to prove the following statement:

You shouldn’t eat your canteen all at once!
