Mnemonics In Maths
Tutoring never ceases to astound me and even after 30 years of class teaching experience I still encounter new things. Today I was tutoring a year 6 child, helping with long multiplication. As we chatted and discussed strategies for solving calculations my student started to tell me about the little phrases her teacher had taught her to help her remember the trickier times tables. So we chatted about how useful they were to her and how they helped so I decided to research further into using mnemonics in maths. The reminders she told me about were and I added some more of my own: 8 times 8 fell on the floor, pick it up and it s 64. I ate and ate until I was sick on the floor. 8 x 8 = 64. 8 times 8 went to the store to buy a Nintendo 64 :) Six and Eight went out to skate when they came back they were Forty-Eight. Explanation: to remember what 6 times 8 equals 6 x 8 = 48 6 and 8 went on a date to restaurant 48.. 6 x 8 = 48 You can t have 7 and 8 before you have 5 and 6 7 x 8 = 56 5678": 56=7x8. 6 and 7 are sweatin on a bike made for (four) 2 6 x 7 = 42 Seeing how useful this could be for some children , I found this link to a mnemonics program (1) How to Memorize Multiplication Tables The Home of Times Tales !
