Purpose for writing

There are lots of different purposes for writing and why that piece of writing is being written.

If you are looking to entertain you can use jokes.

To express or describe something you could use poetry.

Or you might want to argue, persuade your point of view, and you can teach, explain and evaluate.

What if you were writing for a newspaper? Imaging what would happen if you were to write a news article in the same way you write your scary stories. Maybe instead of scaring people you should inform them with facts. Thinking about your writing s purpose before you start will mean it is more likely to be understood by your readers.

Who is the audience?

Different audiences are interested in different things.

Think about who you are writing for and what they already know, and then use language they will understand.

Work out who the audience is before you start writing - this will make it much easier.

What is context?

Context means setting your story in the right situation and using the right types of word for that kind of story.

If you`re writing a spooky story, it should be set somewhere scary and have frightening characters.

If you decide to write a fairy story, you could set it in a magical kingdom ruled by a King and Queen.
