For my learners with dyslexia, I like to incorporate various spelling strategies, that I use time and time again that has proven to be successful and help them in their spelling tests and everyday lives.

The children find my spelling strategies interesting, intriguing but most importantly engaging.

The best result I can imagine, is working with my student Arlo*. Arlo is intelligent, articulate and has a wide vocabulary he is always reading. Every time I see him, he has his face in a book. And he reads many types of books too.

A comic book, for fun a textbook, to expand his knowledge and nonfiction books, to gain an understanding of the world around him.

Silly Sentences.

For example, the day of the week: Wednesday. Wednesday is quite hard to spell, don t you think?

It is easy to think it s spelt Wensday, if you were spelling it phonetically, phonetics is great, but sometimes words can be tricky, therefore you might create a silly sentence.

Here is an example of a silly sentence I might create for Wednesday (a boy I tutor came up with this one and I think it s great).

Nearly

Every

Summers Day

For example, A wedding needs a day to prepare,

Then I would get them to highlight the first letter of every word. Dyslexic learners tend to gravitate towards colour.

Then I would get them to draw a picture to go along with their silly sentence.
