The Benefits Of Learning A Foreign Langu
A Multilinguist
Date : 07/05/2020
There are many advantages in learning a second language in our world where global communication is greatly important!
In respect of career prospects, many employers require at least an additional language. Of course, we soon discover that a foreign language has an intricate system with its own rules, structure and lexis and we have to understand these complexities and absorb them. So how do we achieve this task in a manageable way?
Step by step, we learn key skills such as problem-solving as we practise and familiarise ourselves with all the new rules about structure and lexis.
Learning a foreign language enhances our ability to multi-task so that we learn to practise essential skills in a demanding workplace and, in doing so, reduces our stress level!
A study recently conducted in Spain compares multilingual and monolingual people and shows that the former learn to decipher between misleading and irrelevant information and, consequently, can with greater ease undergo the important skill of decision-making.
Learning a new language makes us more conscious of our native language too as we think about new idioms and structure and we start to reflect more carefully upon the interpretation of meaning.
Importantly, in learning a language, we understand and develop an opinion about new cultures as we see the world from different viewpoints which, in turn, helps to improve our ability to communicate in our world today!
