Dyslexia is commonly viewed as a condition. & It is also a fairly known phenomenon that Dyslexia is usually accompanied by other conditions such as &dyscalculia, the maths form of dyslexia& dysgraphia, the writing form of dyslexia& dyspraxia, when movement, balance and sense of space is affected and ADHD, &where the individual exhibits inattention and hyperactivity. & Usually ADHD children are medicated to calm them down and enable them to focus. & lt;/p>However, it is not common knowledge that dyslexia and all its associated conditions can be - for the want of a better word - cured. & This is known as the Davis method and has been around since the 80s. & lt;/p>With the Davis method, Dyslexia is viewed as an ability that gives rise to learning barriers, which affects each individual uniquely. & The term Dyslexia , in this article, is used as an umbrella term to describe other related conditions . & lt;/p>Dyslexics tend to be highly intelligent and creative individuals whose higher-order visual/picture thinking skills gives rise to challenges when met with decoding sounds reading and writing - as sounds are not the natural way the dyslexic mind thinks. & &The dyslexic mind thinks in pictures, experiences and using all senses. & &Therefore being Dyslexic is the product of having a higher-functioning mind and, by removing the negative barriers that this causes, results in the individual becoming high-functioning academically, provided that this is what the individual chooses and is motivated to do so. & lt;br>

The founder of this method, after which the method was named, Ronald Davis, was himself diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). & He describes autism as `super-dyslexia` where individuals diagnosed with ASD experience a greater set of challenges. & Davis describes that dyslexics have a unique ability that the rest of us simply do not possess: an ability to visualise something so strongly that it is, for these individuals, indistinguishable from reality. & This ability, or as Davis calls `the moving mind`s eye`, creates learning barriers when used to decode sounds. & lt;/p>If the mind`s eye of the dyslexic starts moving when trying to read, inhibiting them from reading, the individual is labelled as having Dyslexia. & If mind`s eye moves, when faced with numerical symbols, then individual is labelled as having Dyscalculia. & If it affect their sense of movement and balance, then it`s said the individual has Dyspraxia. & If it affects their writing they have Dysgraphia or Agraphia in extreme cases and the most interesting of all, if it affectes the individual`s internal sense of time, where the individual internal time is set too fast than normal then they are described as having ADHD and if it`s set too slow than normal, they`ll be said to have ADD. & lt;/p>Oftentimes, individuals will have a combination of symptoms that will go by unnoticed and the child will simply be regarded as either under-performing or one of those confusing cases where, although the child`s intelligence is plain to see, for some reason, they can`t read and write very well and they`re thought of as `just not that academic`. & lt;/p>I am currently training to become a fully qualified `Davis Facilitator` that will enable students to overcome their learning barriers. & What I have learned is fascinating. & I am currently working with an ADD student, whom I tutor, and so far I have managed to help him to overcome his inattention and focusing difficulties, where he can now focus on tasks at length and have conversations where he gives undistracted eye-contact, something he had not been able to do until before now. & His mother commented that he is like a completely different child. & lt;/p>The book that enabled me to help these children and embark on my journey to become a Davis Facilitator, is called `The Gift of Learning` by Ronald Davis. & He also wrote the book `The Gift of Dyslexia` and I highly recommend this read. & It has certainly changed my life and those of my students. & lt;/p>
