Once you`ve got the basics out the way, you might decide to try out exams. I believe that the best way to enjoy exams is to be well prepared. That`s why I include all the aspects of the exam syllabus in regular lessons. This includes scales and sight-reading. A little bit at a time make these parts of playing feel less intimidating. They might even become fun! I also think it`s important that exams are not the centre of lessons, but rather a mark of achievement which has already been gained. I encourage my students to play as many pieces as possible, rather than just their exams pieces. I also encourage them to undertake technical exercises and studies. Many students opt to play some pop or film music too. A good variety keeps lessons interesting and stops practice from becoming boring. It also gives students plenty of repertoire to choose from if they want to take part in festivals, competitions, talent shows, or charity performances.
