Will Teachers Be Replaced By Technology In 2020?

Technology is constantly advancing which creates a great impact on the various facets of life - relationship, needs and learning, among others. Many think that technology is indeed a boon to the society. Others argue that this is not absolutely true. With regard to education, technology is seen as an alternative to replace teachers inside the classroom in the near future. With this crucial issue, I believe that teachers who are driven with passion, excellence and commitment to quality education are irreplaceable by any technological invention. The multifarious roles of teachers cannot be completely undertaken by any piece of machinery. Looking at the 21st century education, the global economy demands certain learning and innovation skills such as the 4C's- critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication. Undoubtedly, only teachers with a sense of human touch and understanding can effectively teach and develop these skills among the learners. The role of technology is only limited to providing support and supplement to learning. The teachers who are bestowed with a functional brain and heart remain the lead character and agent in concretizing this vision. Finally, this critical issue confronting the educational sector and posing a challenge to all educators, political leaders and other stakeholders is a point for reflection. The idea of substituting teachers with technology is a subtle message for us to ponder on the current educational system. The quality of learning and education across all levels needs imperative and relevant reform and development.
