You may not think it, but what you do during the summer matters just as much as what you do during the academic year. How can that be?

Consider this: the academic year is primarily about achieving your qualification. Rarely will any employer concern themselves with the details of a specific course or assignment that you have done - what they concern themselves with is the qualification you earn, and what you do during the academic year is progress towards that.

However, we also live in a world where you qualification isn`t going to get you too far on its own. You need to be able to approach the market confidently, professionally, knowledgeably, and with effective business skills. The summer is the perfect time to acquire those things.

As a tutor, I often find myself helping students with their exams and coursework - and that`s great stuff. But rarely do I find myself helping students with interview/case study preparation, CVs, and general business knowledge. And yet, when I interview people for jobs I quite often find that students do a pretty poor job and, as a result, don`t get the job.

So, this summer, do yourself a favour: spend some time working on the non-academic skills that are necessary to help you achieve your goals.
