Introductory paragraph: This is when you explore the context and meaning of the poems in relation to the key words in the question.

Analytical paragraph: This should focus on the form/shape of the poem. Is it a traditional form or an unconventional form? Does the shape of the poem, reflect the action/thoughts in the poem?

Analytical paragraph: Now, consider the structural techniques that the poets use. Rhyme and rhythm should also be noted if they are important within the poem, and used to enhance the meaning. You will not always be able to use quotations here but make sure you are specific.

Analytical paragraph: Next, you consideration should turn to language. This means exploring tone, imagery, metaphor, simile, personification and lexis. However, it also is an opportunity to focus on the use of sound in the poem, for example alliteration, assonance, sibilant sounds, plosive sounds. When discussing sound, always consider why the poet has used it; does it add to the tone (sad/violent/light) or does it emphasise certain words or phrases.

Conclusive paragraph: By now, you should have analysed the two poems in depth with a consistent focus on the key word(s) and with numerous comparisons made throughout the essay. This final part of the essay should be short and concise. In the conclusion you need to sum up your findings on the two poems and put forward your own point of view. Which poem do you find most effective in its exploration of patriotism?
