Experience: I have over three years of experience as a tutor and have taught pupils aged 10-18, with varying skill levels and proficiency in English. I specialise in teaching English Language and Literature as well as essay and writing skills, but am equally confident in tutoring other subjects such as verbal and non-verbal reasoning and Maths up to GCSE level.

I currently support two eight-year old boys with their 11+ school entrance exams, so have experience with a slightly younger age range. I have previously tutored a family of Chinese pupils who spoke English as a second language. This included supporting a 10-year-old boy with his school applications, focusing on verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills as well as interview technique. I also tutored his 16-year-old sister on her English language skills, particularly grammar and vocabulary, and supported her with Maths exam skills. Additionally, my role involved acting as a mentor to help her decide which subject she intended to study at undergraduate level.

I have substantial experience tutoring English GCSE, including both Language and Literature. Just a few of the areas I am adept at tutoring one-on-one include: studying set texts, whether prose, drama or poetry, to establish in-depth analysis skills alongside a personal response to the text; developing sophisticated responses to unseen poetry or prose, by working with each pupil to build a tailored methodology they can effectively apply to any unseen text; comparing literary texts; sharpening writing skills, especially for EASL students, by identifying and addressing key areas of grammatical weakness while expanding their vocabulary over time; and developing essay-writing skills, with an emphasis on the specific exam requirements and building robust arguments.

Additionally, I have provided project-specific support to pupils transitioning into or studying at undergraduate level. This has included helping sixth form pupils to develop ideas for personal statements and assisting with drafting, as well as coaching pupils on Oxbridge interview skills. I also have experience of reviewing coursework and dissertations in order to provide feedback on argument structure, conceptual frameworks and writing style.
