Information about Steve
I graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 1994 with a BEd in Primary English. I have twenty years` experience as a primary teacher and have worked in both the state and independent sectors. In addition to tutoring, I work as an independent maths consultant at the award winning Jamie Oliver school in Nottinghamshire that piloted healthy eating.
Having an interest in different learning styles and teaching methods helps me to engage with the pupils I teach. Throughout my career I have taken pride from seeing pupils I have taught progress whatever their abilities.
I am married with two children one of whom is studying for her GCSEs whilst the other is in Y6. During my spare time I enjoy making music with computers and keyboards. I also teach piano and guitar. I have an enhanced DBS check and my references are also available.
When tutoring pupils, I provide activities that will quickly boost their confidence and raise self-esteem. I also like to find out what their current understanding of a subject is. During these early stages, misconceptions will often come to light that need addressing as these may be hampering their progress. I feel it is important for children to become fully involved in the process of their learning and I like to agree targets with them that we will then work on.
We all learn in different ways. Some of us are very visual and like to look at books, websites and other texts. Other people prefer to listen to things and talk about their learning. There are also people who learn best from practical activities and games. I am very aware of how my different pupils learn best and I tailor my sessions to suit the individuals learning style.
When teaching SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) to pupils I have a range of fun board games that keep pupils motivated. I feel its important to embed concepts in a fun way before tackling SATS questions!
Availability: Monday to Friday: after 1.00 pm.
Saturday: various 9.00 am - 4.00 pm
Most of my tutoring is for small groups (3 pupils maximum at a reduced rate) but I do have a small number of 1 to 1 slots.
Willing to travel: 2 miles
Experience: Having over twenty years` experience as a class teacher, I have worked across all Key Stages and with children from a range of backgrounds and abilities including pupils with a variety of Special Educational Needs. I have extensive experience of Y6 SATS, 11+ and Common Entrance exam preparation.
Whilst currently working part-time in school as an independent maths consultant, I have had experience of preparing pupils for the new style SATS. This has involved supporting some pupils as well as working with gifted and talented children.
In addition to my current post, I was previously employed by Nottinghamshire County Council as a 1 to 1 Primary Tutor where I taught English and maths to pupils from both Key Stages.
When not in school, I privately tutor pupils in maths and English up to and including GCSE.
As I teach in school part-time, I do have some daytime availability. I have been employed by parents who have needed help with home schooling.
I have a proven track record that includes:
Improving pupils GCSE grades for English and maths
100% success at 11+ and common entrance exams
Boosting Key Stage 2 SATS scores to get pupils into higher sets for Y7.
