Information about Lila

Hello! Thank you for taking a look at my profile. I have been teaching in different capacities for the last 7 years - with over 1,000 hours of tuition under my belt, I am passionate about education and getting the best from my pupils! I believe in not only helping my pupils to achieve their highest potential in exams, but I also aim to foster a life-long love of the subjects I teach.

I take a creative and compassionate approach to teaching, and I am sensitive to the fact that the classroom environment can be distracting and difficult to learn in. I make my lessons varied and interesting, and tailor my teaching style to suit each pupil individually. I modify my lessons in accordance with the exam board, and am rigorous in delivering all aspects of the subject, including exam technique and preparation. I plan ahead to reinforce any lessons at school, so my pupils can feel more confident in the classroom. I am especially good at teaching students to cope with exam anxiety, which I have had to overcome myself!

I also understand the importance of passion and curiosity when it comes to learning, and I aim to make lessons memorable and fun. In this way I encourage my pupils to fully engage with the subject, and develop a deep and genuine interest, which will take them beyond their exams and into their life beyond school.

I usually consider the first lesson with a new pupil as both a chance to get to know each other, and a way of assessing where the pupil is at with the subject at hand. Following that, I construct lesson plans to work methodically through areas that they struggle with. This is through setting tasks, creating worksheets, and engaging in dialogue - asking specific questions to the pupil which might help them to join dots and reach conclusions on their own. When it comes to exam-focused tuition, I am rigorous with covering curriculum, ensuring that pupils have a clear understanding of all aspects of the exam.

Say, for example, I had taken on a pupil who had fallen behind in their English lessons at school:

During the first session, I would do a creative exercise with my new pupil, for example a creative writing task like writing a short story about a topic that I provide, or a letter from the perspective of a historical figure. I consider this both a way of us getting to know each other, and also a fun and pressure-free way for me to assess their technical ability (handwriting, sentence structure, descri ptive language etc), and also their confidence creatively in accessing their imagination and putting their creative ideas onto paper. I would then plan my lessons around that initial “assessment”, with an emphasis on any areas that they struggle with.

For exam focused tuition, I always go straight to the website of the relevant exam board and familiarise myself with the exam spec (every board is a little different, and I want to make sure that I am getting it absolutely right for my pupil). Exams are something I have always excelled at, in part because I emphasise the importance of exam technique, which is so often where capable pupils stumble.

Experience:

As a teenager, I volunteered as a teacher in both Art and Music lessons for young students in two local primary schools. During my time at university, I taught English and Music lessons, both one-to-one, and in small groups.

As a new graduate, I was hired by [contact detail removed] Greenwich (in fact my first job with them was to teach my boss’ son!) I spent a year there, teaching 11+, 7+, Maths and English, with some considerable success stories with getting students into top schools. During this time I was also working for an after school clubs agency, teaching art, pottery, IT skills and drama to classrooms in a local school.

I then moved to a new area of London, and have been working as a private tutor since.

Lila is a great tutor, very cheerful, positive and honest. My son enjoys his tutoring sessions with her, and she is definitely experienced with the 11+ exam preparations. I would definitely recommend her, I just wish I met her earlier.
It was definitely easy to find, communicate and start the tutoring sessions through tutor hunt
