Information about Suzanne

Primary: 11 Plus, 10 plus, SATS.
Secondary: GCSE maths and UKJMC ( the national Junior Maths Challenge competition) - develop a love of problem solving.

I am a degree educated mum who is enthusiastic about education and the long term benefits this can bring.

City and Guilds Level 2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in the Classroom qualification (undertaken through Brittons College, Havering), 2019

5 years working as a tutor and 15 years’ work experience as an analyst for economic and public transport consultancies, London.

BA (Hons) First class degree in Economics, University of Essex

Masters degree, Economics and Econometrics, University of Essex.

My tutoring approach:
For maths my approach is to start with special number series, number manipulation, factors and multiples, shapes, fractions, decimals and percentages before continuing with the remaining topics.

The UK maths guru, Gareth Metcalf, encourages students to use a range of tools to understand and then solve maths word problems. There is an order of tools to be considered when tackling any type of word problem. Teaching this helps the student to gain confidence in tackling any type of problem. At the beginning maths can be taught as a language. Next we see if a problem can be represented by a drawing / model or a diagram. Other tools include looking for patterns, substitution - providing certain things appear in the question, working backwards, restating the problem, solving part of the problem, etc. I aim to give students plenty of time to think to work out things for themselves and listen to how they got to their answer.

For English, nothing is better than regular reading. I have methods to encourage and improve creative writing. I teach the key literacy aspects which bring a piece of writing to life and go through grammar, punctuation, some spelling rules and comprehension.

For GCSE Maths I use various online resources and recommend my students purchase the CGP Edexcel Maths Revision and Practice books.

Please contact to discuss needs.
