Information about John
I`m a trained (BSc, BEd) and experienced (9+ years) teacher working primarily as a tutor for students in both East Anglia and across the UK. In university I completed a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree, which included a specialist in psychology and a minor in English literature. After completing my teacher training in 2012 and gaining experience in schools, I soon focused on 1-to-1 tuition, making psychology, English, maths and coding my main subjects, teaching the following levels:
English for Key Stages 1-3 and GCSE
Maths for Key Stages 1-3 & GCSE
Psychology for GCSE and A-Level
Computer Programming Foundations (Age 8+)
For English and maths, I typically teach two groups of students: Those with predicted scores of 3 or lower who need a passing grade, and those predicted to pass, but who are underachieving and hoping to raise their grade to a 6 or 7. My approach involves first providing a basic assessment to understand a student`s strengths and weaknesses. Based on this information, I create a tutoring plan tailored specifically to that particular student. Using a mix of curriculum and non-curriculum materials, we first focus on making gains in the areas giving them the most difficulties. We later proceed to cover a broad range of topics needed to succeed in English or maths. When exams approach, we cover exam questions more directly, focusing on both accuracy and speed, to ensure confident application of what we`ve been learning in our lessons.
For psychology, my approach is more content based: We first focus on gaining a strong understanding of the necessary theory, research and statistics, which is often the main contributor to poor grades. Once that`s achieved, I provide assistance with either preparing for exams or teaching students how to improve their grades on written assignments.
Given my love for coding my own apps, I also teach foundational computer programming skills to children and adults using `student` languages such as BASIC. I`m also able to teach Python and Java, but only foundational skills and OOP for beginners.
Since 2018, due to an increasingly busy schedule, I mainly do online tuition. While most of my students are in KS3 and above, this option can work for younger students, so long as they are familiar with the basics of using computers, or at least a tablet (computers are preferred, but when tablets must be used, I strongly recommend a keyboard). The online resources I use in lessons include whiteboards, PDF readings & handouts, videos, audiobooks, and text-based apps I code myself.
My rates are listed above. Note that one-to-one and online tuition are priced the same on Tutorhunt. For my current availability, please see the calendar displayed below. I am available on any days and times which display a green checkmark.
Don`t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Availability: During the week, I am available for appointments from 4pm to 9pm. On some weekdays I can also do morning appointments. I also tend to make either a Saturday or Sunday available, usually from 1pm-6pm.
Willing to travel: 1 miles
Experience: I have 9+ years of experience tutoring students. I started tutoring students in 2013 one-to-one and in small groups in both London and Surrey. In 2015-2016 I relocated to East Anglia, doing primarily in-person appointments in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. Since 2018 I mainly focused on online tuition, tutoring students across the UK, as well as a number of international students (typically those following a UK curriculum).

Feedback For John (31)
John is so nice and very patient. My sons like his lessons.
Mr John is an excellent tutor! When I started lessons with Mr John, I was achieving low grades. During the toughest time of the GCSE period, Mr John helped me jump 3 grades in a short amount of time. His well planned lessons and diligent teaching allowed me to better understand the exam paper along with adapting skills to benefit my writing. I would highly recommend Mr John!
I have been taking lessons with John over the last month. John is very patient, good at explaining things in a very clear and methodical way. I highly recommend him.
Extremely kind Tutor for my 17 year old son. He coped well with his Dyslexia and took everything at a good pace.
John is really a good tutor. His lessons are well panned. Enough homework he provides to practice the topics which he covers. Definitely my son is enjoying the lessons and has already shown signs of improvement though its not very long time. He is very professional. We are very happy the way John is teaching and my son is progressing.
I don`t know much about computer programming but my son loves his lessons with Jon. He is calm and very understanding.
First, I would like to thank him for everything he has given to my sons. He teaches my son in the eighth grade and the other in the sixth, and both of them love him very much. His method of explanation is more than wonderful, and we will continue with him. He knows very well the explanation of the curriculum and how to make the student solve the questions in the exams.
John currently tutors two of my children, who are 10 and 13 years of age, with their English. I am extremely happy with how the lessons are going, and have seen significant progress in a relatively short period of time. Most importantly, my children look forward to their lessons with John each week. Highly recommended.
John has been really helpful with reviewing GCSE maths for my son in year 10.
John is very patient and explains maths concepts in a way the children understand.
only had one session but the one I did have John was very helpful.
John is a great tutor. I am happy with the choice we made. After the first lesson with my 8-years-old daughter he found approach to make lessons more interesting. He is very consistent and all materials are structured for easy understanding. He knows how to challenge students and how to get them involved in resolving difficult tasks. Our goal is to maintain British Curriculum as our daughter is currently at Canadian School. Highly recommend John as a very responsible and professional tutor.
John is very helpful and a great tutor

My daughter has two lessons so far and is finding John very helpful , friendly and very comfortable as a tutor. He`s making such a big difference already. We`ll be booking lessons to see her through the her A level exams in the summer. Keep being you John! thumbs up.
He is a great teacher and he has helped me a lot to do my homework and to improve my writing skills
John`s easy going manner put my son at ease and he has been a reliable, committed and helpful tutor.
John has been tutoring our daughter for her upcoming GCSE for the last few weeks, and we are really pleased: She has already gone up one grade!....he`s also very personable and would highly recommend him to any other students.
My son lost over 3 years of education due to ill health and a lack of provision by his school. I wish I had found John and this site earlier, as in only two short months before my son`s exams he managed to improve his confidence and ability a great deal and increased his grade from the level he had been predicted.
John was very quick to respond to emails and messages and the communication around lessons was excellent. He was flexible with lesson times around my son`s health and energy levels, and repeatedly went above and beyond the time paid for, in order to prepare him for his exams. We are very grateful and highly recommend him.
John is a great teacher with a good and enthusiastic attitude! very helpful!
Very impressed with John`s approach. We`ve noticed a vast improvement in our daughters comprehension skills.
We have found John excellent for tutoring our child in English and Maths. He is knowledgeable, well organised, friendly and very approachable. We have seen the results already in our sons learning and improved application. Highly recommended
I had John as my personal psychology a level tutor during my second year of college as I was struggling to keep my grades up. He cares about his students achieving, taking time to focus on areas that they may be struggling with. Having a lesson a week with him helped me go from a U in my mock exams the first year to a D/C average in practise papers, I`m so thankful for that.
John is an excellent tutor, who has guided my son in his English GCSE revision, and boosted his self-confidence in this subject.
John has been a great tutor so far. My daughter really likes him. He`s got a fabulous contact with her and easily finds her weak points to work on them. I would highly recommend him to everyone.
John was very helpful. He is patient, takes a lot of time to make sure we are happy with his help, and is very professional. I would definitely recommend him!
He`s hard working and kind!
Really helped me with my first year Psychology degree!
John very good and patient
Knew his material well
Was easygoing about where to meet and times
would use him again!
I personally highly recommend this tutor to anyone who is currently studying A-Level Psychology. This tutor helped me achieve an As in my A2 Psychology exams, and now I am currently at my top choice university studying psychology. He makes things clear to understand and not only works during tutor sessions but also outside of them by going over materials and topics to provide the highest quality teaching. John spends plenty of time explaining things and has very strong knowledge of the topic area.
