Information about John
I`m a trained (BSc, BEd) and experienced (9+ years) teacher working primarily as a tutor for students in both East Anglia and across the UK. In university I completed a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree, which included a specialist in psychology and a minor in English literature. After completing my teacher training in 2012 and gaining experience in schools, I soon focused on 1-to-1 tuition, making psychology, English, maths and coding my main subjects, teaching the following levels:
English for Key Stages 1-3 and GCSE
Maths for Key Stages 1-3 & GCSE
Psychology for GCSE and A-Level
Computer Programming Foundations (Age 8+)
For English and maths, I typically teach two groups of students: Those with predicted scores of 3 or lower who need a passing grade, and those predicted to pass, but who are underachieving and hoping to raise their grade to a 6 or 7. My approach involves first providing a basic assessment to understand a student`s strengths and weaknesses. Based on this information, I create a tutoring plan tailored specifically to that particular student. Using a mix of curriculum and non-curriculum materials, we first focus on making gains in the areas giving them the most difficulties. We later proceed to cover a broad range of topics needed to succeed in English or maths. When exams approach, we cover exam questions more directly, focusing on both accuracy and speed, to ensure confident application of what we`ve been learning in our lessons.
For psychology, my approach is more content based: We first focus on gaining a strong understanding of the necessary theory, research and statistics, which is often the main contributor to poor grades. Once that`s achieved, I provide assistance with either preparing for exams or teaching students how to improve their grades on written assignments.
Given my love for coding my own apps, I also teach foundational computer programming skills to children and adults using `student` languages such as BASIC. I`m also able to teach Python and Java, but only foundational skills and OOP for beginners.
Since 2018, due to an increasingly busy schedule, I mainly do online tuition. While most of my students are in KS3 and above, this option can work for younger students, so long as they are familiar with the basics of using computers, or at least a tablet (computers are preferred, but when tablets must be used, I strongly recommend a keyboard). The online resources I use in lessons include whiteboards, PDF readings & handouts, videos, audiobooks, and text-based apps I code myself.

Availability: During the week, I am available for appointments from 4pm to 9pm. On some weekdays I can also do morning appointments. I also tend to make either a Saturday or Sunday available, usually from 1pm-6pm.

Experience: I have 9+ years of experience tutoring students. I started tutoring students in 2013 one-to-one and in small groups in both London and Surrey. In 2015-2016 I relocated to East Anglia, doing primarily in-person appointments in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. Since 2018 I mainly focused on online tuition, tutoring students across the UK, as well as a number of international students (typically those following a UK curriculum).

Mr John is an excellent tutor! When I started lessons with Mr John, I was achieving low grades. During the toughest time of the GCSE period, Mr John helped me jump 3 grades in a short amount of time. John is really a good tutor. His lessons are well panned. Enough homework he provides to practice the topics which he covers. First, I would like to thank him for everything he has given to my sons. He teaches my son in the eighth grade and the other in the sixth, and both of them love him very much. His method of explanation is more than wonderful, and we will continue with him. He knows very well the explanation of the curriculum and how to make the student solve the questions in the exams.

John is a great tutor. I am happy with the choice we made. After the first lesson with my 8-years-old daughter he found approach to make lessons more interesting. He is very consistent and all materials are structured for easy understanding. He knows how to challenge students and how to get them involved in resolving difficult tasks. I wish I had found John and this site earlier, as in only two short months before my son`s exams he managed to improve his confidence and ability a great deal and increased his grade from the level he had been predicted.

I personally highly recommend this tutor to anyone who is currently studying A-Level Psychology. This tutor helped me achieve an As in my A2 Psychology exams, and now I am currently at my top choice university studying psychology. He makes things clear to understand and not only works during tutor sessions but also outside of them by going over materials and topics to provide the highest quality teaching. John spends plenty of time explaining things and has very strong knowledge of the topic area.
