Information about Ned

Hi, my name`s Ned.

I`ve just graduated from Somerville College, Oxford, with a First Class BA degree in History. I graduated 9th in a year of 224 students, scoring an average grade of 72.83 and also scoring an 81 on the ‘Disciplines of History’ paper. During my second year I also received an ‘Exhibition in History’ from Somerville College, as well as a First Class mark in my first year ‘Prelim’ exams. At GCSE I achieved 12A* and at A Level I achieved a D1 in English, along with As in Maths and History. My personal interests are in Modern American History (post-1865), the histories of South and East Asia, and in the critical theory of thinkers like Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard; in order to pursue these I am currently studying for an MA in History at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies).

I have studied a wide range of subjects which come up in the History syllabus: the English Civil War, Norman Conquest, French Revolution, Bismarck and the rise of German Nationalism, the First World War, American Civil Rights Movement, British Empire and the Tudors (to name a few). I am looking to tutor History students at the 11+, 13+ and common entrance level.

I am also interested in tutoring English literature. My undergraduate dissertation was a History-English crossover, looking at literary approaches to India`s partition (1947). I`ve always secretly wished I studied English at University, and read widely (recently I`ve been enjoying George Orwell and Alice Walker). At A Level I scored the top mark in my year group, and especially enjoyed studying Seamus Heaney`s poetry. I would like to tutor students at the 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance Level in English.

I have also previously tutored for the Oxford admissions process, giving lessons on key concepts such as race, gender, class and postmodernism. Along with this I offer detailed preparation for the interview, the submitted work, the personal statement and the History Aptitude Test (HAT). I am looking to take on students for the admissions process, either over an extended period of time, or for one-off guidance sessions.

Outside of the classroom, I like running, playing football, writing music and cooking veggie food.
