Information about Edward

My tutoring motto is "chill, but electric."

It`s really important to me that my students want to be in class, and that we know exactly what we`re working on and working towards.

This is something I`ve learnt over 3 years of tutoring, giving 550 hours of 1-on-1 tuition by the latest count (March 2024).

And, in my experience, it works. I`ve had students start in January on 3s and finish in June on 7s, I`ve guided dozens of Oxbridge candidates through the interview process, and I`ve mentored extensively in English 11+ and History GCSE. As one recent student said; "Ned is wonderful. If I have to rank all my tutors, Ned is at the top."

I do all of my teaching online, finding it to be more efficient than in person. With a ZoomPro account and 400+ hours of experience, I`m professionally confident in the fact that online is just as good as in person.

There`s four key subjects that I teach:

Oxbridge Applications (History).
English GCSE.
11+ English, early years English, UKiSet and general English reading/writing fluency.
History GCSE.
I graduated from Somerville College, Oxford, in the top 3% of my year group (finishing in the top-ten students). In this time I scored an extremely rare 81/100 in my `Disciplines of History` Finals paper, a first in my Dissertation on Anglo-Indian Partition literature, and was awarded the `Somerville College Principals Prize` as well as an `Exhibition in History` for finishing first in my college. I also received awards from the Royal Economic&History Society and, in 2017, won the Julia Woods Oxford History Prize (2017).

Before University, I scored 12AStars at GCSE, and an AStar and 2As at A Level (English, History, Maths). I scored near-on 100% in both my English GCSE and A Level exams.

When I`m not tutoring, I`m pursuing a career as a musician and songwriter. Beyond that, I`m deeply passionate about all things History (mainly post-1750) and reading novels (Rushdie, Alice Walker, George Orwell are some favourites). A secondary aim of tutoring is to pass on this enthusiasm to my students!

Reviews:

"Ned is wonderful. If I have to rank all my tutors, Ned is at the top...I enjoyed a lot Ned’s classes. I found his classes extremely useful, as proved by my HAT result, which landed [me] in the top 7% of all candidates.” (Fred, Oxbridge Applicant).

"An excellent tutor...the materials he prepared for our tutorials were instructive but also testing... [and] I also really enjoyed his down-to-earth and entertaining approach." (Successful Cambridge Applicant).

"Ned managed to have my child very committed to improvements, he made tremendous progress thanks to Ned’s work and tips. He did great to cover the whole programme in a very limited time, and I can’t really see how Ned could have done any better.” (Carole, parent of an iGCSE English student).

“Fantastic organisation to arrange an initial taster lesson. Well thought out lessons. I would highly recommend Ned.” (Mark, parent of an GCSE English student).

“My daughter enjoyed the zoom lessons with Ned; she learnt a lot and was well prepared for her exams. Ned was always well organised, the link was sent in advance and Ned was connected on time.” (Gaelle, parent of an IGCSE English Student).

“I really enjoyed brainstorming ideas with Ned. I particularly liked it when he challenged my perspective or gave a counter-argument (and felt particularly happy when I was able to do the same to him!) I definitely see an improvement in the way I write and even in the way that I have started approaching my essay questions. There has also been a significant improvement in the basics such as structuring a sentence (for example, making it more concise and ‘juicy’ as opposed to long and rambling sentences). He also helped me fight the urge of including multiple quotations which did not have direct relevance to my essay. We stuck to the same time every week, and he was open to my suggestions [re timing].” (Cambridge Undergraduate History Student).

“Thanks for all the help you gave me… I’m way better for it.” (Michael, Oxbridge Applicant).

Ned has been a great English tutor for my 9 year old son. He really enjoys learning from Ned, and tells me that they have a lot fun during their sessions; he always looks forward to their tutoring sessions. Ever since he has started tutoring with Ned, I have observed that my son’s writing skills have improved greatly.

Ned has been wonderful, he has taken him through the literature book, analysing and giving him essential exam techniques.
