I`m thinking about the maths ututoring I do and the comment I hear so often from parents/guardians...I never did well at maths at school; I`m useless at maths!

Humour me and ask yourself....

Do you have a bank account?

Do you buy food?

Do you run a car or use public transport?

Do you book holidays?

Do you organise days out?

Do you have a mobile phone?

Do you use the internet?

Do you buy stuff in sales?

Trust me, if you do all those things you`re doing maths and doing it well.

The words that you use may be different to the teachers in school, but you and they are tackling the same subjects and getting the answers right.

The key to building your child`s confidence in maths (and yours if this is an issue) is relating maths to the real world and tying in what they are doing at school with what YOU do on a daily basis.

There are lots of daily tasks where you can link in maths words with the maths vocabulary your child`s teacher is using. Getting the words right is half the battle!
