Just a couple of books I read before going to university that really helped and got me in all of the lecturers good books.

Globalization and its discontents by Josepth Stigletz, This book is a must read for anyone it looks at the failures of the IMF and World bank from a man who worked there. Very important as it focuses on developinbg countries which will be helpful as course now tend to have some area of developmental economics. Any book by Stigletz is useful tool as most lectures eyes will shine if they hear you mention his name.

Animal Spirits by Akerlof and Shiller. This book interested me greatly as it revises JM Keynes` idea of animal spirits. The book gives evidence of the real world application of the theory. This book is great for any Keynesian economist.

Lastly,

One Economics, Many Recipes: Globalization, Institutions and Economic Growth by Dani Rodrik. This was a difficult read for me as Rodrik`s view is neo-classical, but by the end of the book I had a new understanding of some of the current neo-classical theories.

These books are all writen by current Economists, they are a great starting point for the heavier stuff that comes in the course.

I would recommend these books to anyone with an interest in Economics and current affairs.
