Creative Writing for Kids is my own, original series aimed at helping children enjoy creative writing and general literacy. All the exercises have been used in individual lessons and school workshops.

This is one of my most popular books. I`m including some free resources on here so that you can try them yourself.

Jumble Words: Mrs Fickle

Mrs Fickle has opened a new shop. So far, we know nothing about Mrs Fickle or her shop. Look at the words below. Choose at least 3 from each list, then write a short story describing Mrs Fickle and her shop. You can also draw pictures, using the words you have chosen to help you.

Mrs Fickle

jolly clever tall fat freckles hat stern giggles grey ginger red old loud friendly cold young pretty cat curly fussy sleepy tiny

Her Shop

small smelly sweets flowers counter full soap vegetables fresh paintings big empty cheap keys books paper magazines toys games clothes food

Comic Strip: Otto Loves TV

Make a story in a comic strip. You can make it as long or as short as you like, but there are three things you need to know to help you:

1. Otto loves TV!

2. Otto loves swimming.

3. Otto likes experimenting

Double Act: Runn-ing

You are going to write a story, but there are two things you need to include in it. One is that there must be lots of movement in the story. The other is that at least 7 words must end in the 'ing' sound. Have a go!

Adventures into the Unknown: The Climb

Write a poem, using the three ideas below. You decide how long your poem should be and whether or not you want it to rhyme.

1. You are climbing over very hard ground

2. You almost fall.

3. You hear strange noises.
