They say it`s best to start to learn a language early but that`s not my experience. I only started to learn German at school aged 15 but very soon I was a top achiever. I can honestly say that it was one of the best decisions I ever made. My knowledge and achievement in German brings me enjoyment and satisfaction every day. But how did I do it? Here are a few tips that might be useful.

Be realistic set clear goals You need to be realistic in what you can achieve over a given time frame. You are not going to progress from beginner to `fluent` in a short space of time. But your goal is not to be `fluent`, at least not in the beginning. That would be an impossible goal. Your goal is to achieve levels of competency. The first level might be to `get by` in common situations. To do this you may only need to acquire 500 words, or 100 phrases. If you learn 10 phrases a week consisting of 50 words - you will have achieved your goal in 10 weeks.

It might not be easy but it can be fun! Learning a language is difficult. If we could only acquire the language just like we did as a child, life would be a lot easier. But unless you are a very young person living in the country where your target language is spoken, that`s not going to happen. You will have to learn it the hard way. But it needn`t be a struggle, in fact, it should be a fun and satisfying activity. If you enjoy your language study, you will learn more effectively.

Develop strategies to aid learning There are a number techniques you can use to enhance the process of language learning, for instance using memory aids to learn vocab, or perhaps playing recordings in the car and repeating them. Repeating aloud is one of the best learning strategies there is.

Listen or watch online Today via the internet, there are many opportunities to watch or listen to German-speaking media. There are also courses on DVD or online which combine all audio visual and written elements together to create a the best learning opportunity ever.

Visit the country! Get real experience Though media provide an excellent window on the language and culture, there is still no substitute to visiting the country and entering the language environment. And though you may not understand every notice or sign or every word you hear spoken, you can immerse yourself in it and gain motivation. Even as a beginner you can order a coffee, or go to the station and buy a ticket. Knowing a foreign language at any level is a fantastic experience that everyone should enjoy, though sadly few native English speakers make the effort.

Mistakes are good - they are are part of the process of language learning. Many language learners are discouraged when they make mistakes. But it`s important to remember that mistakes are part of the process of learning a language. It is impossible to make progress without making mistakes. In fact you progress by making mistakes, then correcting them.

Be proud of what you`ve achieved! Don`t give up! You need to maintain a positive attitude when learning a language. At times it can become overwhelming, your initial enthusiasm may drop, and you may feel tempted to quit. Don`t quite, just keep going!

Join a class - get peer support You can gain extra motivation by joining a class. A good teacher really motivate and encourage students. You`ll make new friends too. They`ll support you and provide opportunities to practice through role-play.

Get online training It`s also possible to follow a course online. It could be a computer-based course, or it could involve communicating with a tutor.

Working with a tutor - probably the best way to learn. A good tutor can tailor the work directly to you, your difficulties as well as your goals. The tutor can give you undivided attention, and focus on specific areas as needed. There is in my opinion no substitute for face to face interaction when learning a language. That`s what I do every day.

My recommendation: Learn in three different ways: Attend a class, do an online course, study with a tutor! And above all enjoy learning a language - it`s fun!
