Three reasons why people struggle at A level maths and what to do about it

The big one is trying to learn by following recipes instead of understanding. There is no way to that you can learn a complicated subject unless you know why each little piece works. In fact, taking the time to understand things properly makes life much easier in the long term, not only in mathematics.

Unfortunately, this is something that people tend to learn with age, and may not know this when doing their A levels.

The next is getting stuck. Maths is a linear subject and the material builds upon previous results. If you do not get unstuck quickly, you may not be able to do the next topic. Pretty soon you will be weeks behind. Ostriches might put their heads in the sand but they don`t get good grades at A level maths.

Finally, there are people who think they can learn the subject without doing lots of problems. Perhaps they can for a while, because they might know some of the material already but soon they will have to learn new stuff.

Working at problems is what maths is about and you are kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

You won`t get fit by thinking about going to the gym and you won`t get good at maths without doing your problems.
