As a mother myself, I understand the frustration of employing a tutor who does not seem to be helping my children understand and tackle the topics that they find challenging. Each child is different; therefore no two lesson plans and targets should be the same. Working through a workbook, for me was not enough to warrant the additional expense of a private tutor. Working with my children, I have realised the key is to build and strengthen their basic literacy and numeracy skills so that they are confident using arithmetic functions, are fluent in their times tables, have a wide vocabulary and regularly read a variety of texts. I have therefore created a study programme that not only focuses on helping children to understand complex areas, but at the same time builds upon their basic skills. Ensuring a strong foundation increases confidence as it eliminates an area of confusion for children. They will not feel belittled or 'dumb' for not knowing 8x7 as quickly as their peers, instead they will move through the curriculum safe in the knowledge that they know their times tables and can expand the array of words used when creative writing. Each class is reinforced with set homework based upon the topics and skills that needs extra practice. Building a solid foundation in basic skills can occur at any time, but once achieved children are able to understand topics such as algebra with less confusion and hesitation.
