There has been a lot of media hype regarding the `God Particle` over the last year. But there has not been a lot of mention of why this particle is a key in quantum revolution. For this we first need to understand what exactly this particle is. To understand the Higgs mechanism, we could use a simple analogy. Think of a room full of friends before a party starts, chattering away quietly. This is like space filled with the Higgs field. Then a popular person walks in, creating a disturbance and attracts a cluster of admirers with each step. This increases his resistance to movement; in other words he acquires mass, just like a particle moving through the Higgs field. If a rumour crosses the room, this creates a clustering, but this time among the friends themselves. In this analogy, the clusters are Higgs particles. The incomplete Standard model of particle physics was finally completed when Higgs Boson was found. It is the quantum of Higgs field and gives mass to all particles. But more importantly, it gave a important understanding of the Standard model, like a fitting piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Early applications of quantum field theories had been plaques with infinites providing nonsense results. The process of overcoming these difficulties was called renormalisation and the introduction of a new scalar field, now called the Higgs field. There are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the Universe such as the dark matter, which might eventually be answered by this breakthrough discovery. However, Higgs boson and its interactions ate at the origin of particle mass.
