When I was at university, I was plagued by worry about the number of essay questions I`d inevitably have to do, when I was studying first history, and then law.

I soon found though, that the answer to cracking the problem, didn`t merely involve burying myself in my books, and hoping that my knowledge of the subject would carry me through.

No, the answer lay in practice papers, although going one step further. Most universities will offer practice papers online, but there won`t be guidance on how to do them the correct way.

These should be utilised throughout the academic year, not merely at exam time, and this is a credo I apply to all of my students. There is an art to practicing essays, and to mastering exam technique, and utilising one`s knowledge of their subject in the correct manner. By practicing short, succinct essay-writing, students not only feel more comfortable with their subject in due course, but with how to structure an exam essay (which will always be much shorter than those they`ll produce during the year).

This is a technique which should be mastered and introduced to the student in the very early stages of their course, and sufficient time should be provided for them to practice it.

Try it - I promise you, it`ll yield results.
