Writing to inform and explain
This kind of writing is factual and the important thing is for it to be as clear as possible, whether you are explaining a situation, hobby or interest or whether you are giving your reader instructions about how to carry out a task. Make sure your writing is focused, clear and logical in structure.
When writing to inform you need to make the information clear to your readers rather than persuading or giving your own opinions about a topic.
When writing to explain you should make sure than you use punctuation and connectives in a clear and logical manner, so that your readers can easily find their way from one section of the text of another.
Writing to argue/discursive writing
This type of writing should explore the wider moral implications of the issue you are discussing. You should construct an argument, using connections to link each paragraph. You should open in a striking or thought provoking way, perhaps with a rhetorical question, or a short sentence, separated from the rest of your writing in its own paragraph.
Use a new paragraph for each main point that you make. Each paragraph should begin with an introductory 'topic sentence' which sums up what the rest of your paragraph will explore and develop in more detail.
