My research focusses on three critical areas which together evaluate the key factors and potential concerns arising from increasing a wider cultural appreciation in the Key Stage 3 English classroom. I touch regularly on the responsibility of the school/curriculum as a wider unit. An enriched education must be supported and sustained across the curriculum, continuity must exist in order to prove effective. Much research has been done in this area under a variety of umbrella terms yet little has been said on increasing cultural awareness in the English classroom. My research also covers the role of the students and the emphasis on the individual. I have examined the role of meta learning and meta teaching strategies which maximise a student`s potential to think, reason and be self aware. One important implication arising from this is the necessity for sensitivity. A knowledge of students` and exercising a consistent, impartial manner of teaching. Finally, I consider the role English teaching has to play. Given these initial considerations, how can English teachers ensure they are delivering a diverse, culturally aware and sensitive curriculum that represents and encourages opinion, experience and culture?
