Parents and teachers alike generally agree that it is important to get young people to read more. But what they want is often very different from what the young people themselves want and nobody likes to be told what they should do! So here is some advice and tips for young people and parents on ways to read for pleasure: Read about something that interests you. Remember that reading doesn`t just have to be from books. Reading articles in newspapers, magazines and even on the internet can be just as valid. Read something with challenge, but not something that is inaccessible to you. Talk about what you are reading with someone. This gets you thinking about what you are reading and how you feel about it. You could even read the same thing as a friend or family member so that you can both discuss it as you go along. If you have enjoyed a book, read something else by the same author. Parents should sit down and read with young children. It is never too early or too late to start this. Parents themselves should read for pleasure. Remember that reading for pleasure should be just that. If you care about what you are reading you will ultimately get a lot more out of it.
