I`ve spent too much time at UCAS conferences upsetting 17 year old students when i`ve had to be the first one to tell them that they have not taken the A-level combinations they will need to access the Undergraduate courses and careers they have always dreamed of.

Biology is an incredibly broad subject area and unlike most other subjects can be used to access a number of academic and vocational pathways.

A signiciant number of schools will recommend students to opt for those subjects that most interest them however, if one of them includes biology and plans for your future include biology, you will need to be a little more strategic in your choices.

Biology, chemistry, with maths/physics is the preferred route for any student considering medicine, vetinary science etc

However most Russel group universities and other research intensive universities will request this combination for most of their biology related undergraduate programmes.

Biology and geography as a combination with chemistry and/or maths provide a good start for students more likely to consider courses with an environmental flavour.

Students taking a science, a language and humanities subjects should be careful as while these do provide a great opportunity to gain educational breadth when you`re otherwise uncertain, they can limit progression to science.

i`ll provide more detail and further advice in this article when i have a bit more time. I`m just getting started.....
