Many students lose out on vital `easy` marks in many examinations, especially practicals. Some people put it down to just luck or the myth that some people are just born knowing how to do well at practicals while others are not. I have composed a list of things that are sure to up your practical mark in the exam that you probably took for granted before.

Arrive early: Endeavour to arrive at least 15 minutes before the intended start of the practical. This will no doubt up your confidence levels as you will be more relaxed and be able to think better. In some centres, you may be allowed to organise your work space ahead of time.

Get your lab kit on: Examiners are always watching out for a slip like this. Be sure to put on your lab coat, safety specs (and gloves if required) as soon as you enter the room. Also make sure you are in right practical gear when leaving home. Leave the long jewellery, shorts and high heels at home.

Tie your hair back: This goes without saying. Long hair is a big hazard point in the lab which is not easily missed. If your hair is long, tie it back in a bun, making sure that ends are not in sight or reach.

Read and follow all instructions: Most exam pitfalls come from not understanding the instructions correctly. Make sure that as soon as you are able, you read the entire set of instructions and follow them religiously. If the instruction is to allow a reflux of 40 minutes, then don`t expect to get full marks (or yield) for waiting only 20.

Manage your time: Students seem to run out of time, because they haven`t thought out their mode of operation properly. If during your practical, you are required to wait for something to happen (e.g a colour change, or crystal formation), don`t just sit and wait for it. Use this time to answer other questions that don`t directly involve what you are waiting for.

Show understanding: It is also a good idea to think of plausible answers as to why you are getting certain results. Practicals are not all about getting the `expected` results, but being able to explain what went wrong if something does. This shows that you have scientific understanding of what is required of you.

Attempt calculations and extended questions: Ensure that you know the basic practical calculations up your sleeve! In Chemistry practicals, for instance, you can`t get away from mole calculations, calculating average titre or percentage yield. These are give-away marks students often miss.

Go over your work: In going over your work, you are better able to assess yourself and correct any anomalies. You can only do this if you have ample time remaining before submission, but it is a good idea even if you are running out of time.

Above all, make sure that you are academically prepared for your practical. Make sure you have done your research on the topic beforehand and are aware of necessary calculations. Remember, it is assessed and carries a substantial weight towards your overall grade.
