First of all, learning a new language is always a challenge and can be quite overwhelming. This is especially true if you don`t know where to start. I have experienced this as I myself have learnt a new language and have come to realize these 5 important points which will hopefully serve as a small guide to get you started.

Number 1 - Get A Tutor! If you are in a new country and English is not your first language, you will quickly soon realize how frustrating it can be to try to express yourself freely and may find yourself struggling to get your point across. Not only will a tutor help you get started with the fundamentals of the language, they can assist and guide you on where to start.

Number 2 - Write Topical Articles One of the best ways to start building up phrases and getting to join new words that you have just learned together, is to write an article about something that interests you.

Not only is it easier to write about things that you find interesting, but this is will also help bring in more structure to your sentences. This is something that takes time, and time is something that will ultimately reward you. So get your pen and paper out or just use your laptop and start writing more and more and this will hopefully motivate you even more.

Number 3 - Read books Read books! Read many books! Read some the most famous book in English. Reading will help your brain into thinking about using correct grammar and will force you to think about the meaning of words and how to use them efficiently.

Getting a tutor is important but can only take you so far, it is when you take the personal time to read and think for yourself about why sentences are structured the way the are that you can start to make connections with words and ideas and therefore be able to express yourself more clearly.

Number 4 - Make Goals To put it simply, if you do not know what you`re goal is you will soon easily lose focus and motivation. Always think about what you want to achieve when learning the new language, do you want to speak fluently and without errors or do you want to simply learn a few phrases to get by?

If we set goals everyday, even if it is to learn 1 single word a day or read and write and article ever month you will start to see significant improvements and will therefore get more motivated to keep going a little further everyday until we reach that goal.

Number 5 - Practice, Practice, Practice! It seems like an obvious point, although you will soon notice that it is those who take a bit of time everyday to learn a new word or just take the time to speak a little more in everyday conversation who are improving the quickest.

Many people who start learning a new language get embarrassed about doing mistakes, which is something you can`t waste time worrying about, as you are bound to make mistakes when you first begin learning a new language. So just jump right in the deep end, and start practicing in everyday conversations.

So leave a comment, write back if you wish and let me know what you think.

All the best.
