Mitosis is the process by which a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells. During mitosis, the cell`s DNA is replicated and then evenly divided between the two daughter cells. The process consists of several stages, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase, the chromosomes condense and become visible under a microscope. In metaphase, the chromosomes line up along the center of the cell. In anaphase, the chromosomes are pulled apart and move towards opposite ends of the cell. Finally, during telophase, the cell divides into two daughter cells, each with a complete set of chromosomes. Mitosis is essential for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction in many organisms.
