Why Is Music Important?

Written by Atmos

Music is a universal language that can be used: to express emotion, thoughts, and ideas to raise awareness of societal and political issues to build communities for ceremonial purposes and even to simply enhance the shopping experience of a customer. It is a part of our daily lives and it has the power to influence how we feel and how we perceive the world we live in. It is a form of communication that has the potential to change the world and the path of history itself.

Music unites people. It can act as a bridge between language barriers, people with different values, and people of different cultural backgrounds. It has helped in the process of breaking down segregation, protesting for change, and raising money to help those who have suffered as the result of a crisis or a disaster. An example of this is Live Aid. Live Aid was a benefit concert held in 1985, as well as a music-based fundraising initiative. The original event was organized to raise funds for relief of the 1983-1985 famine in Ethiopia. Live Aid eventually raised $127 million in famine relief for African nations, and the publicity it generated encouraged Western nations to make available enough surplus grain to end the immediate hunger crisis in Africa (History, 2009).

Music can be used to create ambience and enhance an experience. This includes audio-visual media (such as TV and film), events, and more. An example of this can be heard in the film Alien (1979) where music is used to create a mysterious and other-worldly atmosphere.

Our emotions can be changed when we experience music. Happy and uplifting music may make us feel joyful whereas sad and melancholic music may make us feel sorrowful. Music is a great tool for channelling how we feel and embracing our emotions.

Music can be used to focus and concentrate on a task. For example, listening to classical music can increase productivity by helping students to study longer and retain more information. Music can also be used to train your brain to become more attentive.

Listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory. Listening to familiar music can help to recall a memory from long ago, especially if it stems from the same time period that you are trying to recall (Johns Hopkins Medicine).

Music can inspire us and stimulate our imagination. It can help us to open up our mind to new possibilities. It can be used to convey ideas that are difficult to express within the limitations of other languages.

In addition to the above, music can simply be listened to for enjoyment, which is an important part of life.
