Anatomical terms related to position

1.Supine:lying on the back with the stomach,nose and belly facing up,hence the word s"up"ine.

2.Prone:lying with the back facing up and the stomach and other visceral organ facing down.

3.Median Plane:This is an imaginary line that divides the body into two equal parts i.e left and right sides only.

4.Sagittal Plane:This an imaginary line that arises from the arrow shaped suture on the base of the skull which divides the body into unequal left and right sides.

5.Medial:Means Closer to the median plane.

6.lateral:Means away from the median plane.

7.Proximal:Means closer from an organ or structure of reference.

8.Distal:Means far away from an organ or structure of reference.

9.Coronal plane:An imaginary line that divides the body into upper and lower parts only.

10.Superior:Closer to the head.

11.Inferior/Caudal:Closer to the tail region or lower limbs.

12.Dorsal:Back facing up especially in animals.

13.Ventral: The stomach facing down especially in animals.

14.Oblique:In slanting position.

15.Hypo:lower or down
