Plants
Cell Wall Strengthens the cell. In plant cells it is made of cellulose. Chlorophyll Green pigment in plants and algae which absorbs light energy. Chloroplast Absorbs light energy so the plant can make food. Diffusion One way for substances to move into and out of cells. Guard Cells A pair of curved cells that surround the stomata. Osmosis The movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration. Phloem The tissue in plants that transports the products of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis A process where plants and algae turn carbon dioxide and water into glucose and release oxygen. Root Hair Cell A specialised cell that increases the surface area of the root epidermis to improve the uptake of water and minerals. Stomata Pores in the bottom of a leaf which open and close to let gases in and out. Translocation The transport of dissolved material within a plant. Transpiration The loss of water from leaves by evaporation through the stomata. Vacuole Found in the centre of a cell containing fluid.
