What Is Religion?

This topic examines the nature and characteristics of every religion in our world. It helps the students to analyze the beliefs and faith of a group of people.

Religion is a system of beliefs of a group of people, which influence and determine there faith, practices, world view and culture. Some of the major religions of the World are Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, animism, taoism and African traditional religions, etc. Christianity that is known to be founded by Jesus is mai ly found in the western world and corners of the World. Islam which traces it`s founder in Mohammed is m ainly found in the Arab world, Asia and north Africa. Judaism as the religion of the Jewish people is mainly found in Israel and north America. Buddhism which traces its origin from Gautama Buddha is mainly found in China. Animism that Is mainly based on worship of spirits, or ancestral worship is mainly found with the indigenous people of Africa, Australia and the Americas. African traditional religions are mainly found in Africa and the look at life and the world as mainly full of spiritual powers and the living dead that are always involved in their lives. Most religions claim their origin from divine revelation through some one (founder) with extra ordinary charisms,wisdom, and miracular powers. Most of them have written text and they are known as there holy books or scri ptures which are used for teachings , guidance, preaching and prayers. Some of the religions want to spread there thoughts, beliefs and practices to other people by winning converts, So as to dorminate and conquer the world either peacefully or forcefully. Most of the religions practice, worships and prayers as ways of communicating and interacting with the divine and spiritual world. They have there own set of theologies concerning the different issues of life such as birth, adulthood, marriage, death, ethics and eternity. Most of the religions also have leaders who are given and entrusted with the responsibility to guide the followers to adhere to what they claim to believe in. There are worship sites, such as churches for christians, synagogues for Jews ,mosques for moslems ,temples for Buddhist and shrines for Animists and african traditional believers, where services, worships and prayers are conducted in communal way. As human beings continue to explore and develop different systems of beliefs and philosophy of life, there are other religions that may still be emerging into our world today as long as attract some followers and work towards recognition.
