• Germany invaded Holland and Belgium Chamberlain thought it was his duty to continue.

• The war cabinet was not in favor especially influential Kingley Wood.

• 1940 Norway campaign was a disaster and Hitler took Norway.

• Debate in the commons concerning Norway led to major political change.

• 7th + 8th of May 1940 Chamberlin came under attack from his own MPs even Leo Amery a former ally.

• Labour took advantage and forced a vote on conduct govt. won 281 to 200 instead of usual 200 majority 40 cons voted against.

• Conservatives wanted Lord Halifax, who was reluctant to renounce his title.

• Chamberlain could not stay and Halifax would not step up Churchill was the only alternative.
