The Skeletal System.

A brief synopsis of the types of bones within the skeletal system.

Within PE, it is paramount that all students possess and understanding on all body systems, most importantly the skeletal system.

The skeletal system is the system holds the body upright, and provides the body protection against impact of damaging force.

There are 5 different types of bones within the body, and each bone serves its own unique purpose, these include:

1) Long bones (such as the femur and humerus) - These bones are used to promote movement and provide leverage in moving weight. Weight lifters, Javelin throwers and discus throwers use these bones the most during their sporting activity.

2) Short bones (such as the carpals and tarsals) - These bones are used to provide stability to long bones, and also provide some movement around their joints, which is why you are able to move your wrist joints.

3) Flat bones (such as the sternum and cranium) - These bones serve a primary purpose of protecting vital organs within the body from harm.

4) Sesamoid bones (such as the patella) - These bones are found within tendons on the hands, feet and knees. The sesomoid bones sole purpose to to protect the hands, feets and knees from wear and tear.

5) Irregular bones (such as the vertebrae column or sacrum) - These bones shape are extremely unique, that they cannot be classified as short, flat or long. There complex shape however, serves a purpose in protecting vital organs. For example, the vertebrae column serves the purpose of protecting the spinal chord, and the pelvic girdle serve the purpose of protecting your reproductive organs.
