The Importance of Learning Maths Concepts in the 21st Century

How Maths concepts are learned and the importance of confidence

Mathematics is a unique learning experience. To have a highly developed concept of number, algebra, shape and space, data handling, probability, and finally ratio and proportion, is to have the power to solve difficult and demanding problems in our daily lives, and not just Maths problems.

Many children and students of all ages learn Maths incorrectly. There are a number of reasons why this happens, from not having a specialist Maths teacher at Primary school, to having a specific learning difficulty which makes the learning of Maths extremely hazardous and haphazard!

Wherever people are on the learning continuum, there is a way to help them to learn and make progress in Maths. Experts in the field of learning refer to the building blocks of a subject and how important it is to correctly assemble these building blocks and ensure that any missing ones are speadily put in place before moving on. This concept is even more important in Maths than many other subjects, because the next steps more often than not rely on previous knowledge and understanding. Without this you are moving forward with gaps in your knowledge and therefore, an incomplete understanding of the Mathematics model by which real learning and understanding takes place.

If you have been disadvantaged in life by not already having a good knowledge of Maths, it is vital for your future that you try to remedy this imbalance as soon as you can. Individual learning programmes have proved to be the most effective way forward to understanding, improvement, and building confidence in your own ability in Maths. Having confidence means you can be brave and try to solve problems even if at first you don`t succeed. The confidence that you build up in yourself leads to a greater desire to try things out, and when you do this you have a better chance of succeeding in the longer term because you have the desire and appetite to move forward in your thinking much more quickly and with an increased awareness of what is required.

Children and students who have barriers to learning most often do so with Maths. It`s something about numbers and their relationship to reality that causes confusion in people with difficulties or with barriers to learning. The most important consideration here is to try to understand the nature of that specific learning difficulty and find a way of creating an understanding by using creative modelling techniques and being aware of exactly where a student is in terms of their knowledge and understanding before commencing on an individual learning programme.

As a very experienced and successful teacher of Maths, having this insight is imperative for the current and future learning of all students under your care. Please choose carefully!
