All children are unique and that uniqueness should be celebrated. Children will learn better in different ways and teaching is about finding methods children enjoy and allowing them to use them - and also express themselves - when attempting to solve problems. Take for an example times tables - some children are better at learning their times table off by heart while other children will look at ways of breaking down numbers eg multiplying by 4, is doubling a number and then doubling again. There are many different ways to solve a mathematical problem.A huge development with the new curriculum, and in particular support by Herts for learning, is to ensure that children are given an opportunity to explore different methods to solve problems and allow them to use these methods to apply their mathematical thinking to problems. Without hesitation, I have adapted this approach to my own teaching and tutoring with great results. Gone are the days that children just followed step by step instructions to solve problems. Allowing children to share their own ideas with their peers opens up endless possibilities and in turn encourages a greater depth of understanding and mathematical thinking.
