Since its foundation, the Ecologist has challenged conventional thinking and the status quo. The relationship between the collective action of individuals and the effect on the Earth has constantly been explored; both in high-impact issues such as the 'Blueprint for Survival' but also in regular TAKE ACTION features.

Writing without political bias or corporate interest, the Ecologist is a key contributor to the relatively recent drive to increase public engagement with the environment. The promotion of Zac Goldsmith to Editor in 1998 marked a shift of focus: it evolved from a niche academics' journal to a popular magazine for the general public that explained not only environmental issues but also, more significantly, their relevance to society.

In the post-GM food and -MMR era, the Ecologist has played a vital role in providing an authoritative voice on issues such as science, health, deforestation, agriculture and nuclear energy for a public that is often distrustful of scientists and government policy. Although mainstream newspapers are most often the primary source of scientific news for the public, as indeed the terrestrial channels are, the Ecologist and channels such as National Geographic remain the most credible scientific news providers.

By discussing controversial issues outside traditional formal contexts and by exposing problems that the public is often unwittingly aggravating, publications like the Ecologist help to create transparency. This not only holds scientists and companies to account in a very public way, but also promotes dialogue and encourages debate about topical issues - which can play a key part in the decision-making of both individuals and governments.

Many media outlets have a need for quick, manipulated answers about complicated issues and so publish simplified and often sensationalised science headlines that will be eye-catching. In contrast, the Ecologist is aware of the impact that science journalism can have on public perception and so its articles resonate with the realities of the day - regardless of what issues are 'in vogue'. Its editors reject the tendency to write exaggerative and misleading news that will sell to a huge readership - they take care to include the contexts and caveats that are so important to these topics and yet so often neglected. As Zac Goldsmith said, 'It was never set up as a business venture.'

Since the Ecologist re-launched online, it has been building a global digital capability by using social media to reach a wider audience. It rivals mainstream news sources by providing readers with in-depth analyses, a platform to discuss issues and an immediacy that is increasingly expected.

The Ecologist tries to establish the place of the environment, science and health in the public domain. Its readers are challenged to consider their actions, make localised adjustments and work towards a better, more sustainable world. Importantly, it gives a voice to individuals and groups that cannot represent themselves, personalising important issues and providing impetus for change.
