A research team is interested in how many T-shirts people own. They interviewed 10 people and the results are shown below:

4,7,4, 10, 1, 3, 6, 2, 12, 4, 5

Find the mean, median, mode and range of the data set.

To find the mean you have to add all of the data values together and divide by the number of data values (which is 11 because there are 11 pieces of data):

(4+7+4+10+1+3+6+2+12+4+5) / 11 = 5.27

To find the median you first have to order your data from smallest to largest:

1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12

The median is the middle number and so in this case the median is 4 T-shirts

The MOde is the MOst common value. I have capitalised them like that deliberately to help you remember.

The most common value in this case is 4 and so the modal number of T-shirts is 4

The range is the largest number - smallest number. The range is 12 - 1 = 11
