NURSING- Importance of Academic Performance in Career Advancement A good university will always look out for the best students to join its prestigious courses. Universities in general are in their pursuit to excel in terms of quality output of their students. They can`t afford to the `garbage in, garbage out` system of teaching and learning practices especially when there is stiff competition in the field of professional education. As a student of Nursing, you are required to demonstrate your progress through results in the examinations. Even if you are a brilliant student, if you do not have testimonials to show your progress, you will have to face difficulties in achieving your dream career. Many students having very good grades at the school level are found to be scoring poor in nursing examinations. Loss of focus is the main culprit behind this. Distractions are always there, but a student who is serious about his career should invariably be concentrating on his studies rather than anything else. One must put aside all those extra-curricular activities for materializing the ultimate goal of career building. An academic session missed can be a great step missed in career building. The nursing curriculum is devised with a view to develop the complete nurse, especially in graduate studies. There is no waste in the curriculum. Every chapter of the prescribed textbook and every session at the college are meant for making you a professional nurse. It would be an irretrievable loss when a class is missed. All teachers may not be equally competent to make the sessions pleasurable experiences for you. But each teacher is a great resource of knowledge for you to tap from and assimilate. A good student will always rely on his teachers for drawing academic information and inspiration. He will not weigh them on the basis of their teaching skills. Instead he will weigh them on the basis of their initiatives to help you out in your studies. Either they can clarify your doubts or give further explanations to your topic of interest straight away or they will refer other sources of required information and get back to you later with clarifications and explanations. Many great teachers remain silent or less talkative in the classrooms while possessing abundant resources within his field of teaching. This should be realized by students and seek knowledge from such teachers. Though teachers are expected to be great motivators, some of them are not so. But that does not mean that they are poor or less knowledgeable people. It is interesting to note that some of the greatest philosophers and teachers in the world were in fact the quietest human beings. Proactive learning is the best way of learning. During the process of education, a student realizes his own gifts that bring him abilities to struggle and survive. This self-realization is one of the most important objectives of education. A good education will develop the emotional quotient of the student to optimal levels for achieving success in life. Teachers had a hero`s role in the classrooms of the past. Today they only have a supporting actor`s role. They have evolved into facilitators for education as the focus is on students. More and more technological innovations have been adopted for pedagogical process, as the learning becomes more and more activity centered. Unlike in the past, students now have various avenues of knowledge acquisition, other than what they get from colleges. Availability of internationally acclaimed, economic editions of books in the market, the revolutionary world-at-fingertip Internet super highway, highly customized mobile phone technology, the latest developments in education technology and virtual classrooms have become congenial sources and interfaces of knowledge for an aspiring student. Students who fail or score low marks in any subject of any year or semester of graduation in university examinations do not stand successful in getting admission for higher studies in reputed Indian and foreign universities. Even in situations where you have an offer from a foreign university, the embassies of foreign countries in India check your academic performance in the qualifying examinations. If you have failed or were poor in a subject during your undergraduate studies, the caseworker in the embassy may refuse your application for student permit. They might argue that you have not satisfactorily proved your academic mettle during the qualifying examinations and hence are not likely to be successful in achieving the objectives of the educational programme you have opted for higher studies in the foreign country, where the academic standards are more rigorous, requiring higher levels of scholastic aptitude from the participants. Poor academic performance may have its deleterious impact on the employment selection process too. Where all candidates have similar academic qualifications, the selection process will orient towards academic performance. There will be more reliance on marks you have secured in each unit of the qualifying examinations. If you have achieved good scores in each paper, you can be more confident during the selection process. An employer with corporate vision will always give due importance to the academic performance of the candidates along with other parameters. Most of the nursing boards in foreign countries conduct nursing proficiency examinations for the registration of foreign trained nurses. Tests like NCLEx RN, HAAD, Prometric, etc examine the theoretical and practical knowledge of the nurses, where your academic knowledge is the most important key to success. If you are not thorough with the basic concepts and principles in each and every aspect of nursing, you will reach nowhere in these rigorous tests. You cannot be a sure winner in NCLEx RN by simply mugging Mosby`s.
