Mathematics Is Necessary For Life

Mathematics is a wonderful subject that is needed by all individuals in their lives. Without necessarily realising it, we all need and use mathematics every single day. It can save everyone both time and money, from bills and shopping to percentages and estimation. Therefore becoming confident in maths is, I believe, essential.

I would like to leave you with a fun mathematical proof:

Reports are now circulating that Professor U Sless from the University of Life has recently produced the following proof of the Salary Theorem:

The less you know, the more money you make.

Proof:

It may be assumed that:

(i) Knowledge is Power.

(ii) Time is Money.

(These are fundamental assumptions on which all salaried employment is based.)

From classical mechanics it is known that: Power = Work / Time (consult any elementary mechanics textbook for verification).

Combining the assumptions: Knowledge = Power and Time = Money , it is easily established that Knowledge = Work / Money .

Solving for Money, leads to: Money = Work / Knowledge .

Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity, regardless of the amount of Work done (provided only that Work is at least slightly greater than zero).
