Self-esteem is a complex term, pertaining to the evaluation of the discrepancy between self-image and the ideal self. Research suggests that self-esteem can impose either a positive or negative influence on the learning process. It can have a impact on how an individual views tasks in life, and has also been found to have an influence on behaviour. Emotional development, in particular, has been found to have a significant impact on the education of pupils with Special Educational Needs, and especially those experiencing Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties. It has been found to be as important, if not more so, than the academic (or cognitive) curriculum. My research has revealed that musical activities can be used, and is very effective in addressing this emotional development, by enhancing the self-esteem of pupils with Special Needs. This can, in turn, lead to other benefits elsewhere in the curriculum such as improved literacy, numeracy, co-ordination, social skills, and greater levels of personal expression. These findings do not have to be restricted to children with Special Needs though, music has benefits for everyone of all ages.....
